SUFFOLK REPUBLICANS APPROVE TERM LIMIT PRESERVATION ACT OF 2025

Defending Voter-Approved Term Limits from Albany’s Overreach

Medford, Suffolk County – Statement from the Suffolk County Republican Committee Chairman on the Legislature’s Passage of the Term Limit Preservation Act of 2025:

“Today, the Suffolk County Republican Super-Majority Caucus in the Legislature passed the Term Limit Preservation Act of 2025, a strong, necessary measure to protect Suffolk’s voter-mandated term limits from the confusion and chaos created by Albany’s partisan agenda.

“This legislation aligns Suffolk’s term limits law with the new election schedule imposed by the state—preserving the spirit and intent of citizen-led government. It ensures that local elected officials continue to serve within the limits the people approved, regardless of interference from Albany Democrats.

“The Even Year Election Law - rammed through by Albany Democrats and signed by a failing Governor Hochul, strips away local control by shifting our elections into the noise of national campaigns. It hides critical local issues from voters, disrupts accountability, and confuses the process.

“This is a blatant voter suppression tactic, dressed up as reform. Nothing more, nothing less.

“If left in place without safeguards, this law would:

  • Undermine Suffolk’s voter-approved term limits

  • Disrupt county leadership through mid-term resignations

  • Force unnecessary and costly special elections

  • Sow confusion and reduce voter engagement in local matters

“Today, Suffolk Republicans took a stand. We are not going to let Governor Hochul’s power grab erase the voice of the people. The Term Limit Preservation Act ensures that term limits remain strong, clear, and enforceable - just as 85.9% of voters demanded in 2022.”

Information Points:  A Record of Proven Republican Leadership on Term Limits

  • In 1993, Suffolk voters adopted strong term limits by public referendum—a commitment to accountable, citizen-led government introduced by Republican lawmakers.

  • In 2022, Republicans took decisive action to close a loophole Democrats tried to exploit in 2021. The reform capped service at 12 years total and was approved by 85.9% of voters (449,605 votes). Again, sponsored by Republican lawmakers.

  • The Term Limit Preservation Act is the next step in protecting the voice of the people from being drowned out by political power plays.
